Weyerhaeuser Timberlands Attorney in Seattle, Washington

We are seeking a licensed attorney with approximately 8-12 years of experience to join the Weyerhaeuser Law Department. The successful applicant will join a team of six other lawyers providing primary legal support to Weyerhaeuser’s Timberlands, Real Estate, and Energy/Natural Resources businesses in the United States and Canada.

While the attorneys on this team are regularly engaged in a wide variety of matters covering the full suite of legal support to these businesses, this position will have an emphasis on federal, state and other environmental regulatory and administrative law issues, including but not limited to the Clean Water Act, ESA, state forest practices rules, state BMPs, CERCLA/MTCA, SARA, and other challenges to forest management activities that arise across the 19 states in which we own 12 million acres of timberlands and other assets and in Canada where we manage over 13 million acres. Experience working with regulators and helping clients defend against citizen-group actions is valued, as is experience with regulatory compliance programs and incident investigations.

Client activities to be supported include * The full suite of timberland management activities, including timber harvest and sales; site preparation and reforestation; planning and road building; and log purchases and sales * Federal, state, and other regulatory programs affecting all facets of forest management * Participation in regulatory policy arenas and industry organizations * Third-party sustainability certification * Leasing for oil and gas, wind energy, geothermal, recreation, and communication sites * Wood supply agreements, including biomass transactions * Miscellaneous other commercial agreements. * Real estate purchase and sales, including timberlands * Real estate development and land use Areas of practice emphasis include: * Natural resources, environmental, and regulatory/administrative law, especially state and federal regulatory programs affecting all timber management activities; * Real estate and land use (all issues that a large landowner sees – e.g., title, access, boundaries, trespass, leasing, licensing, easements); * Management and/or oversight of litigation affecting the businesses; liaison with Law Dept. litigation group; * Forest and product certification and sustainability issues, chain of custody and supply chain management support; * Contract advice, support and drafting – including service contracts for an extensive contractor system, including logging and transportation contracts; and * Real estate transactions – negotiations and advice, documentation, closings (purchases, sales, tax-deferred exchanges); * Basic business legal compliance advice to clients, including antitrust, FCPA, liaison between the business and other subject matter specialists within Law Department.

Successful applicants will meet the following criteria: * Washington licensed attorney (or eligible for reciprocity) and graduate of an accredited law school * 8-12 years of experience practicing law in several of the above-referenced areas, especially natural resources/environmental law * Must possess superior client relationship skills * Ability to manage multiple assignments * Work collaboratively with other lawyers (both within the WY Law Department and outside counsel) and seek out solutions as a meaningful contributor to a world-class timberlands organization and corporate Law Department * Ability to travel from time to time as needed to meet client needs and maintain relationships Attorneys on the Timberland, Real Estate, & ENR legal team are encouraged to expand their areas of practice and expertise to fulfill the complete needs of the businesses, and to meet new and emerging needs as the business grows and evolves. In addition to working with other Weyerhaeuser businesses that interact with Timberlands (and providing some routine environmental regulatory support to our Wood Products business), opportunities will likely arise for project-specific work at the corporate level or with other businesses within Weyerhaeuser.
